Monbukagakusho (Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture, Government of Japan) offers 3 types of scholarships to study at Japanese schools commencing in the Academic Year of 2004. Selections have been made for year 2003 - 2004.

Research Student Scholarship (post-graduate level)
Qualifications:
- Applicant must be a South African Citizen and under the age of 35 years, in principle.
- University Graduates/ Post Graduates - those who will graduate from a university by March 2004 (April departure) or September 2004 (October departure) may apply.
- The study area must be in the same field as the applicant has studied (or currently studying).
Terms of Scholarship:
- Duration of non-degree study is approximately 1 and half years with optional 6 months of Japanese language courses prior to study. The period of study can further be extended through variable procedures (i.e. those pursuing a Master's degree).
- Departure to Japan in the beginning of April (including Japanese language courses) or the beginning of October 2004 (excluding Japanese language courses).
- The Japanese Government provides return airfare, tuition, and a monthly stipend.

Senshu-Gakko (vocational training schools) Scholarship
This scholarship offers applicants the opportunity to spend up to 3 years at a Japanese professional training school studying one of several fields including:
- Civil Engineering
- Architecture
- Electrical Engineering
- Electronics
- Telecommunications
- Nutrition
- Infant Education
- Secretarial Studies
- Hotel Management
- Tourism
- Fashion, Dress making
- Design
- Photography
- Other
Qualifications
- Applicants must be at least eighteen years and less than twenty-two years of age as of April 1, 2003 (i.e. born between April 2, 1981 and April 1, 1985).
- Applicants must have either completed a twelve year regular course of school education or graduated from a school equivalent to the senior high school in Japan, by March 2003.
Term of Scholarship
- The Senshu-Gakko Student applicant's awards are tenable for 3 years from April 2003 to March 2006.
- The Senshu-Gakko Student applicant's term cannot be extended.
Selection
- After the document screening process, the Senshu-Gakko applicants take an examination in Mathematics and English.
Education
- Senshu-Gakko students who have completed the prescribed course at the Japanese language school will be placed in a Senshu-Gakko into the advanced professional course that follows senior high school education and study the professional subjects for two years.
- Please note that a guarantee of the Senshu-Gakko cannot enter a university or other institute under the Japanese Government Scholarship after completing the required course.
College of Technology Scholarship
Fields of Study

Qualifications
- Applicants must be at least seventeen years and less than twenty-two years of age as of April 1, 2003 (i.e. born between April 2, 1980 and April 1, 1985), applies to the College of Technology Scholarship.
- Applicants must have graduated from a school equivalent to the senior high school in Japan and have completed at least eleven year regular school education, by March 2003.
Health
- Those studying Mercantile Marine as a College of Technology Student must have eyesight better than 0.6 (corrected eyesight) and no colour-blindness.
Term of Scholarship
- The College of Technology Scholarship applicant is far more complicated, as the awards are tenable for 4 years from April 2003, to March, 2007, except for those majoring in Mercantile Marine, who are granted four and a half years up to September, 2007.
- The College of Technology Scholarship applicant's term can be extended if the grantee has special reasons to continue to study in a Japanese University (transferred as a junior) after graduation from the college of technology, may have the term of scholarship extended, if he/she has made excellent results. The extended term is two years at the maximum, and no extension shall be made beyond this period.
Education
- The College of Technology Student has a five year course which follows junior high school education; however, the grantees of this program will be enrolled into the third-year class of the college of technology and study a professional subject for three years.
Selection
- After the document screening process, College of Technology applicants take 2 examinations of Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry.
