The Government of Japan, through its Grant Assistance for Grass-roots and Human Security Projects (GGP Programme), signed a grant contract on the 15th March 2006 to the amount of US$ 27,609 with Manzini Youth Care in Manzini, Swaziland. This is for the renovation of three children’s homes located in Manzini and provision of the necessary equipment for the homes, such as mattresses and blankets.
The GGP Programme is designed to assist eligible organisations including Non-Governmental Organisations, Community-Based Organisations, School Governing Bodies, Local Governments, Hospitals and Clinics, with a specific project aimed at directly reaching and immediately benefiting disadvantaged communities at a grassroots level.
It is widely recognized that the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS in addition to the chronic unemployment rate has affected people badly in Swaziland. The terrible consequence being that many children are the worst affected, not having been able to receive proper parental care or simply being neglected and living on the streets. To this effect, Japan aims to extend its assistance to Manzini Youth Care which has supported unprivileged and socially vulnerable children since 1978 and further hopes to contribute to the future of the youth concerned.
The Government of Japan’s assistance to Swaziland, including the GGP Programme, has amounted to approximately US$200 million. This covers various fields such as food aid, agricultural development, cultural grants and education.
